Week 5- The Culture of Art

1. Functions of Early Art a. What were the cave artists trying to say? - I believe that they were showing how they lived their lives and the certain people and things that were important to them. After looking at the art, they mainly focused on the people and animals that were involved in their lives. The art of the animals showed them traveling and how they acted in certain areas. The cave paintings show their cultural traditions that involved the people and animals. b. Why do you think that there were so many animals and not as many people in the paintings? -I think that were was more paintings of animals than people because they were constantly surrounded by the animals in the paintings. They wanted to show the different kinds of animals that they were able to hunt and eventually eat. The animals played an important role in their survival so the artists probably felt that it was more important to draw them instead of a bunch of people roaming around. Also, it was probably ea...

Week 4- violence politics post

1. The Yanomamo rules regarding killing and the consequences for breaking these rules differ from the rules in Western cultures in general because they deal with the killings in different ways. The Yanomamo kill the enemy in return for killing one of the kingsmen. They use the term "tit for tat" when they decide to kill the enemy. The reason why they do this is because they believe that it will make them fierce and hopefully keep others away so their people don't get killed. They appreciate and respect the men and women who kill which are known as Unokai. They are rewarded for their aggressive tendencies. The Yanomamo have different practice than the western cultures because they don't have regulations like the western cultures. I believe that their would be more killings in the western cultures if there weren't any consequences such as the death penalty. 2. The process of revenge killings in Yanomamo populations begins with either the killing of a kingsmen or s...

Week 3 Blog Post: Language

Part 1: > This experiment was difficult for me. The reason for this is because I don't use hand signs often which made it difficult to get my point across. Since I wasn't able to speak, I was forced to use hand signs which I wasn't familiar with. I began to get frustrated throughout this experiment because I wasn't able to get my point across as quickly as I wanted to. > I felt that this conversation wasn't going anywhere because the person didn't really understand what I was trying to say. The patterns in the conversation were definitely altered because of my absence of symbolic communication. These patterns were alerted because the conversation didn't flow as easily as I wanted it to. I was able to understand my sister easily because she was able to speak but it took her a while to understand me which meant that I was constantly repeating myself. >The culture that has the advantage in communicating complex ideas is my partner because she is a...

It doesn't rain very much during the winter season. -The Zulu population were exposed to ultraviolet radiation since they are located in South Africa. The people who are from these areas typically have more melanin than others which means that they won't be affected as much. 5 descriptive words that I would use to describe the population Miner discusses. Secretive- I would use this word to describe the Nacirema culture because it explained how the rituals that are associated with the shrine are done in private and kept a secret. Also, these rituals are shared with only children which meant that people from other cultures were unaware of the events that were taking place. They are also forced to hide their pregnancies. They continuously expressed the importance of keeping their traditions to their people only. Committed- They were dedicated to their ways of living and never complained about why they had to  do things a certain way. They experienced pain such as having their heads baked in an oven for an hour and having their faces lacerated by sharp objects. The people knew that they were chancing their lives but they had faith in the doctors. These people repeated their culture and were wiling to do anything for it. The people kept the tradition go...
If you were stranded on a desert island, what two items would you take and why.  -I would take my backpack so that I could survive. I usually have water and snacks in there. The second item that I would take is my cell phone. I would try to receive service or walk around and try to find service. I would like to talk to my family so that they would be able to help me.
